A Silly Fun Thing
I don't know why, but this Comcast Channel 8 site is taking a survey (loosely defined). There's just one question:
Right now the results are: 94 percent of respondents are intelligent people who correctly understand that you're born with your sexual orientation, and 6 percent are ignorant twits who "think" it's a something you choose.
What's your opinion on homosexuality?
1. It's genetics and biology; you are born with your sexual orientation
2. Homosexuality is a lifestyle choice

If there was a third option I would choose that. I don't think you are born with a sexual orientation, but I do believe that it develops over time (and there are biological factors and possible genetic influences over it).
I agree, these two choices are wimpy. I have never seen a gay infant ... or a straight one.

Not one to require a whole lot to thinking.
Probably one silly enough that Richard Cohen/PFOX and Recall/CRC would hang their hats on as scientific proof.
FYI, the split is now 32% / 68% with the "born with it" side losing ground. How on earth?

Recall/CRC/PFOX are all avid readers of this blog. I can just imagine those dummies sitting at their computers all day voting.
We could ask the BOE to teach all of the relevent views of homosexuality:
1. Because of genetics or hormonal influences in utero, sexual orientation may be already set at the time of birth.
2. Sexual orientation may be influenced by experiences or other unidentified factors in early childhood, and appears to be immutable once it is established.
3. Sexual orientation may be triggered by some combination of genetics, prenatal hormones, and early childhhood experience.
4. Research hasn't indicated clearly which of these factors is strongest. But research continues to identify inherent biological characteristics in homosexuals which differ from those of heterosexuals. The scientific evidence supports biological, rather than chosen, sexual orientation.
5. All mainstream medical and mental health organizations agree that homosexuality is not a disorder.
Then once again, the CRC would get just what they want. But I bet they'd complain about that too.

Just because you don't manifest a sexual orientation until middle to late childhood doesn't mean you aren't born with one. You don't manifest your maleness or femaleness at birth, either, except in very subtle ways, but you are definitely born either male or female or some fixed combination thereof. In the language of biological development, there are organizational effects and activational effects. Testosterone organizes the animal sexual system in utero, and that includes sexual identity and orientation. At puberty the same hormone, or in the female case, estrogen, activates the latent system for the purpose of reproduction. There is no evidence that animals, and that includes humans, are a blank slate sexually at birth.
I supppose you could be born with a sexual orientation that has yet to menifest; however, I don't believe that sexual orientation is permanently fixed at birth. Currently I'm on the belief that sexual orientation possibly fluctuates over a person's life time, but I'm only speculating, since there's far too many things in this world we don't know about that could change a way a person thinks, and it could be different for different people (the reason why anecdotal evidence is merely wishful thinking).
There is absolutely no way an informed person would actually vote for it being a lifestyle choice.

I just looked at the results. It looks like TTF considers 81% of the metro area to be "ignorant twits".
Oh, and it makes me wonder....

No I didn't choose my sexuality. It chose me. As long as I can remember I was always attracted to the opposite sex.
If a person can choose to have sexual relations with either gender, then that person is by definition bisexual.
