Double Lives

This guy, Cliff Kincaid, is editor in chief of the nutty conservative group Accuracy in Media. He has a column this week called "Homosexual Blackmail on Capitol Hill," and I'd have to say his conclusions are wacky, but there's something fun here. I don't know, I guess I should admit I see a certain kind of dark humor in some of this. Get this, the first few paragraphs of the piece:
It has been tempting for some conservatives to blame the Mark Foley homosexual predator scandal on George Soros and the Democratic Party, rather than Foley himself and the Republicans who protected him. But Soros and the Democrats did not put Foley in the position of House Deputy Majority Whip. What’s more, Soros and the Democrats did not establish or maintain what the New York Times describes in an explosive Sunday article as a secret network of Republican homosexuals on Capitol Hill.

The Times story by Mark Leibovich reports that “The presence of homosexuals, particularly gay men, in crucial staff positions has been an enduring if largely hidden staple of Republican life for decades, and particularly in recent years. They have played decisive roles in passing legislation, running campaigns and advancing careers.”

In another dramatic revelation, The Los Angeles Times reports that one former page was seduced into having sex with Foley, and that Foley used the page program to physically assess male teenagers in order to cultivate them as sex targets.

As I contended during an interview on the public television program NOW, the Republicans have only themselves to blame for this scandal. House leaders permitted homosexuals to infiltrate and manipulate the party apparatus while they publicly postured as friends of family values and traditional marriage. The facade is now in ruins. The press can’t be blamed for seizing on a real and legitimate story. Homosexual Blackmail on Capitol Hill

Now, this guy's a nut but it's still nice to see Republicans admitting that their party is run by gay guys. That particular irony has been noted by many observers, but the ruling party has been in a ... what did he call it? ... a State of Denial.

But the idea that they've "inflitrated" the party is, of course, classic conspiracy-theory junk. Gays didn't infiltrate the party, they are the party. Look, who wants to bet their hard-earned money that the Chairman of the Republican National Committee, Ken Mehlman, is heterosexual? Nobody in their right mind. That isn't "inflitration," that's the Top Guy.

It's like saying that Sicilians have infiltrated the Mafia.

You've had gay men running the anti-gay party, and so of course they had to keep their own affairs secret. And that is the problem. It's not that they're gay, it's that they're gay in an organization whose mission is to malign gay people.

I have seen several bloggers make an interesting observation in the wake of this Foley mess and the excuse-making that has followed it. They say, it makes sense that Republicans hold a sex-obsessed, dirty, devious stereotype of gay people -- that seems to be how gay Republicans really are. The rest of us know normal gay people, who are just like everybody else except for who they go home to at the end of the day. The gay people we know don't have to hide it from us. I'm not proposing sainthood for anybody, just saying that our side doesn't recognize the stereotype, because our gay friends aren't like that.

So, yeah, the anti-gay party has a lot of gay people in it. Did anybody think that would go somewhere good?

Look, it's easy. Give it up, already. We hear these stereotypes, we hear the scare stories, we see the ugliness, but look, just get over it. Some people are gay. They don't do it to hurt you, it's just how they are. The more you force them to lead double lives, the more this kind of stuff is going to happen. The solution is obvious: tolerance, inclusion, get over it.

Gays are already tolerated. Just not given the Good Housekeeping seal of approval.

"Sen. Minority Leader Reid got $1M in land sale

AP: Nev. rep hadn't personally owned the property in three years

Updated: 2 hours, 45 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid collected a $1.1 million windfall on a Las Vegas land sale even though he hadn't personally owned the property for three years, property deeds show.

In the process, Reid did not disclose to Congress an earlier sale in which he transferred his land to a company created by a friend and took a financial stake in that company, according to records and interviews.

The Nevada Democrat's deal was engineered by Jay Brown, a longtime friend and former casino lawyer whose name surfaced in a major political bribery trial this summer and in other prior organized crime investigations."

Ut-oh!

Looks like global cooling is back!

"Earth wobbles linked to mammal extinctions

Fossil records found rise and fall of rodents linked to Earth's behavior

Updated: 2:55 p.m. ET Oct 11, 2006
LONDON - Wobbles or variations in the Earth's orbit and tilt are associated with extinctions of rodent and mammalian species, Dutch scientists said on Wednesday.

They studied rodent fossil records in central Spain dating back 22 million years and found that the rise and fall of mammal species was linked to changes in the Earth's behavior which caused cooling periods.

"Extinctions in rodent species occur in pulses which are spaced by intervals controlled by astronomical variations and their effects on climate change," Dr Jan van Dam, of the Utrecht University in the Netherlands, said.

The researchers found two cycles corresponding to the disappearance of rodent species. One lasts 2.4 million years and is linked to variations in the Earth's orbit. The other is a 1.2 million year cycle relating to shifts in the tilt on the Earth on its axis.

The cycles are associated with lower temperatures, changes in precipitation, habitats, vegetation and food availability which are the main factors influencing the extinction peaks, the study published in the journal Nature said.

"Rodents are very sensitive to seasonal changes because they have such a short lifespan," said Van Dam, adding that they represent one of the best mammal fossil records.

At the moment, the Earth is at the beginning of a cycle.

"The environment is responsible to what happens to species," said Van Dam. "Biological factors are secondary, according to our results."

You're worried about a measly $1.1 million? That's a drop in the bucket...check out what Bush "big time" campaign contributors like Halliburton are raking in.

"Critics are taking a hard look at several rich US contracts to rebuild war-damaged Iraq.

By Gail Russell Chaddock | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor

WASHINGTON – When Susan Collins was just a staffer in the United States Senate, she used to worry about fat government contracts being awarded in secret. Now Collins is a US Senator - and she can finally do something about it.

Senator Collins is drawing a bead on contracts in Iraq, where the US has begun pouring in billions of dollars to repair war damage and rebuild the country. There are charges in the press that no-bid contracts are squandering taxpayer funds.

"A tremendous amount of money will be spent on contracts to rebuild Iraq," says the soft-spoken Maine senator, a leading GOP moderate. She wants Washington to avoid even the appearance of cronyism or war profiteering in these deals. "We have an obligation to make sure that money is not being wasted," Collins says.

Yet some key Iraq contracts already were bid secretly, or on a sole-source basis, to companies with strong ties to the Bush administration. These included a $1.39 billion contract to a subsidiary of Halliburton, an energy giant formerly chaired by Vice President Dick Cheney...."

"...Another $680 million contract for Iraq's power grid, water system, and airport facilities went to Bechtel Group Inc., after a secret bidding process. Together, the six companies invited to bid on the Bechtel contract contributed $3.6 million to federal election campaigns, two-thirds to Republicans, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Democrats call it favoritism, collusion, and even war profiteering."

but hey some men are attracted to young girls is that so bad? it is just sex right.

No. It is more than "just sex." Certain religions have tenets that permit older men who are attracted to young girls to marry them, lots of them:

"Jeffs in Nevada jail

FLDS leader arrested after routine traffic stop near Las Vegas

By Ben Winslow and Nancy Perkins
Deseret Morning News

LAS VEGAS — Fugitive polygamist leader Warren Jeffs had proclaimed that God was protecting him...

Jeffs' capture ends a nationwide manhunt for a man considered a prophet by his faithful followers, a man who was added to the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list on May 6, grouping him with the likes of terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden....

After consulting with authorities in Utah and Arizona, FBI agents questioned and released the two people who were in the car with Jeffs.

Isaac Jeffs, 32, is considered one of Warren Jeffs' most loyal brothers.

"Isaac is Warren's full brother, and he's just pretty much been a 'go fetch it' sort of person," said ex-FLDS member Carolyn Jessop, whose stepdaughter is Naomi Jessop Jeffs.

She described Naomi Jeffs as a beautiful woman with long blond hair going down to her knees. In addition to being one of Warren Jeffs' wives, Naomi, 32, was also at one time one of his "mothers."

"She was married to Rulon when she was 17 and she was Rulon's favorite wife," Jessop said Tuesday. "She was one of the first of Rulon's wives to marry Warren."

When Rulon Jeffs passed away in 2002 at the age of 92, Warren took a dozen of his father's wives as his own...

Jeffs is believed to have been sheltered through a network of safe houses. He has been on the run since he was charged in Utah and Arizona with sex crimes accusing him of forcing teenage girls into polygamous marriages with older men. Federal prosecutors have charged him with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. When the FBI added him to their Ten Most Wanted list, a $100,000 reward was offered for information leading to his arrest.

"The arrest is a major step toward ending Jeffs' tyrannical rule in Colorado City and in the FLDS," said Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard. "He showed flagrant disregard for subpoenas and arrest warrants and told his followers the law didn't apply to him. His arrest should make it clear to everyone that Jeffs, like all the rest of us, is subject to the rule of law."

Recently, the FLDS Church has begun expanding into Nevada, which may explain why Jeffs was in the area. FLDS-linked businesses have closed down in Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Ariz., and relocated to areas like Mesquite and Las Vegas...

"We're excited that our victim is going to have an opportunity now to have her day in court," deputy Washington County attorney Jerry Jaeger told the Deseret Morning News.

He spoke to the girl who claims that as a teenager she was forced by Warren Jeffs into a polygamous marriage with an older man. It was that charge that led to the first-degree felony rape as an accomplice charges against Jeffs, which could get him five years to life, if convicted. Jaeger spoke to the young woman on Tuesday, informing her of Jeffs' arrest.

"She's brave. She's somewhat nervous, too. She's wanting to go forward and wanting to eventually have her case heard and have her day in court," he said."

Nah, I just think having guest nuts on makes for a more entertaining show. Of those four you deride, I find Reilly the most intelligent. Ann Coulter is pretty smart too but I think she's only semi-serious. Humor is part of the package. I only watch or listen to any of them on rare occasions so my evaluations can be taken with that in mind. I've seen more of the nutty liberals I mentioned and the problem is- they're serious. You should have heard Franken on the Letterman show a couple of days after the last election.

And, Andrea, you may think I'm a nut but I know enough to come in out of the rain.

"I just think having guest nuts on makes for a more entertaining show."

Speaking of nuts....

"Tonight on Countdown–David Kuo, who was the number two guy at the Office of Faith Based initiatives in the White House writes a scathing account of how the administration used Christians to grab and maintain power. This story validates Tucker Carlson's admission that: "The deep truth is that the elites in the Republican Party have pure contempt for the evangelicals who put their party in power...."

Author David Kuo's conservative Christian credentials are impeccable; his resume sprinkled with names like Bennett and Ashcroft. Now, as the Foley cover-up has many evangelical Christians wondering whether the G.O.P. is really in sync with their values, "Tempting Faith" provides the answer: No way.

Kuo, citing one example after another of a White House that repeatedly uses evangelical Christians for their votes — while consistently giving them nothing in return;

A White House which routinely speaks of the nation's most famous evangelical leaders behind their backs, with contempt and derision.

Furthermore, Faith-Based Initiatives were not only stiffed on one public promise after another by Mr. Bush — the office itself was eventually forced to answer a higher calling: Electing Republican politicians.

Kuo's bottom line: the Bush White House is playing millions of American Christians for suckers.

According to Kuo, Karl Rove's office referred to evangelical leaders as 'the nuts.'

Kuo says, 'National Christian leaders received hugs and smiles in person and then were dismissed behind their backs and described as 'ridiculous,' 'out of control,' and just plain 'goofy.' " "
