What Does This Tell You?
I don't know about you, but I haven't had a real good feeling about the FDA lately. They just told us that pigs and chicken that have been eating that poisoned feed from China are OK for us. They approve medicine and techniques that kill you, and ban others for "moral" reasons.

False positive? What about a ... real positive?
The meat industry? What about ... us?
Look, this isn't the government saying that testing is unnecessary. This is the government telling this company not to test.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Bush administration said Tuesday it will fight to keep meatpackers from testing all their animals for mad cow disease.
The Agriculture Department tests less than 1 percent of slaughtered cows for the disease, which can be fatal to humans who eat tainted beef. But Kansas-based Creekstone Farms Premium Beef wants to test all of its cows.
Larger meat companies feared that move because, if Creekstone tested its meat and advertised it as safe, they might have to perform the expensive test, too.
The Agriculture Department regulates the test and argued that widespread testing could lead to a false positive that would harm the meat industry. US on Mad Cow: Don't Test All Cattle

From the NYT:
SHANGHAI, May 29 — The former director of China’s top food and drug safety agency was sentenced to death on Tuesday after pleading guilty to corruption and accepting bribes, the state-controlled news media said.
Zheng Xiaoyu, who was commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration of China from its founding in 1998 until mid-2005, was detained last February in a government investigation into corruption at the agency.
The 62-year-old former commissioner received the unusually harsh sentence amid growing concerns about the quality and safety of China’s food and drug system following several scandals here involving tainted food and phony drugs.
I guess they don't have the Medal of Freedom over there.
We're supposed to believe Bushie's FDA that it's OK to eat the meat of the animals that ate the tainted food?

The U.S. government's policy on mad cow testing has been a sore point in Canada for some time. Canada has a comprehensive testing program which has uncovered a few mad cows resulting in an American ban on Canadian cattle as unsafe. In the meantime the U.S. government tests a fraction of a percent of the cattle that Canada does and industry insiders have said that it is common practice to exclude downer cows (those very likely to have mad cow disease) from testing. Its dishonest and unsafe but financial interests override such pedestrian concerns.
