The New Condom Video
OK, we had a moment of doubt about this one, but it's just ... too ... good. There's about a one-second moment in this video that might offend someone, after the five-minute mark, so if you've got kids looking over your shoulder, or if your own maturity level is eighteen or under, I suggest you stop before five minutes. It does that because ... this isn't a joke, it's for real, and they are direct, but some betterthanyous will be indignant. So listen, if you're better than us, bail before the five-minute mark. You'll get the point by then anyway.
This is the new condom video. It looks to me like they may have outsourced it, I don't know, I don't remember anybody mentioning that.
And listen, I have a rule that applies just for this one. If the anonymous trolls want to complain about anything after five minutes, I'm just going to delete their comments. Eh, easy.
This is really a promotional video for the Telugu people of central India, produced at Nrityanjali Academy, Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India. They call this cinematic style, the Telugu style, "Tollywood."
Yes it's funny, but we also hope it has its effect -- they have the same problems we do. This thing covers a lot of bases, in an entertaining way.

LOL...Jim, can I thank you for being honest about where you are coming from? Now if the CRC would drop their pursuit of getting "ex-gays" included in the curriculum and focus on the BIG picture (as you reveal so well in this blog posting)...
Once again, Moral Philosphy 101:
Mr. Ryssman: class, what is a virtue?
Class: (picture Ben Stein's history class in Ferris Bueller's Day Off)...
Mr. Ryssman: class, a virtue, simply put, is a good habit. A good habit can be anything as ordinary as brushing your teeth after every meal, and especially after eating sweets, and it can be as serious telling the truth.
Now class, what is a vice?
Class: (mostly stunned silence, though they do seem attentive...like they are hearing something for the first time).
Mr. Ryssman: ok, class, I'll tell you what a vice is - a vice is a bad habit. A bad habit can be anything from always being late for school/work to not telling the truth.
Now class, some people will tell you that you can have sex with many different people so long as you use protection. Traditionally the reference to sexual intercourse as an act of love recognized that it is an action that creates a bond (literally) and implies a promise (no matter what the agreement may be between two (but hey, why limit it to just two?) consenting parties).
But to have sex without any intent to bond or keep a promise makes one a bit of a liar, and done on multiple occasions with numerous partners makes one a liar several times over.
Ok, class...final question: at the core of your character, do you want to be a truth teller, or a liar? (Keeping in mind that telling the truth is a virtue, while telling lies is a vice.)
Sorry class...I can tell you look a tad bit bewildered...grab a cup of coffee and think about what I have taught you, and we will pick this up where we left off, ok?

No, as I watched it (from the video "you think no end of yourself...you desire for sex with multiple partners...for momentary sexual pleasure you go to great lengths...you get easily carried away in search of this happiness...") the emotion I felt was sadness. Happiness is found in doing what is right, and having sex with multiple partners is not right, hence it is not possible to find happiness in such an action (note that I did not say it isn't fun, but fun is temporary...short term).
Yes, all humankind has this problem...this really is not much of an observation (it is more like saying something as obvious as water is wet...duh!).
The real question is this: do we as a matter of public policy encourage good habits, i.e. VIRTUES, or do we encourage bad habits, aka VICES?
No, Orin, I beg to differ. The question is not whether to encourage virtue or vice, the question is how best to encourage virtue and keep vice to a minimum. Our debate is not over the goal, but the means to it; some of us do not thing that ordering teenagers to refrain from sex is the best way to get them to refrain. Ordering them to refrain, e.g., abstinence-only education, serves the purpose of making the instructor appear virtuous, but does nothing in terms of instilling virtue in the student.
And, BTW, I took their view of having sex with multiple partners as a kind of sorrowful thing: you're young, you want to do that, but you'll be sorry. I certainly didn't think they were advocating promiscuity (and let's keep in mind that we don't know the marriage customs of the Telugu people).

I love Bollywood-this was kind of Bollywood, health education and Teletubbies all rolled into one. I thought maybe this was a commercial for a certain brand of condom- Nirodh? Do you think they showed a drawing of anal sex because people there are more likely to think of a condom just as pregnancy protection?
andrea- not anon
previous anon was me.
"Do you think they showed a drawing of anal sex because people there are more likely to think of a condom just as pregnancy protection?"
Jim, you promised to delete anyone who discussed the magic five minute mark.
Actually, what I said was: "If the anonymous trolls want to complain about anything after five minutes, I'm just going to delete their comments."
Andrea is not anonymous, nor is she a troll.
Sorry, anon-troll.

This is so interesting. In this six-minute video, there is about one second of an x-ray drawing of two guys having anal sex, and our rightwing Anonymi just can't stop talking about it. My index finger is aching from pushing the "delete" button this many times, ouch. I don't understand their fascination with that one second, it seems to be all they can think about.
Sorry, guys, put this in perspective. Some people in India made a video about condoms, with Indian dancing and Indian singing in Indian villages and landscapes. Condoms prevent both pregnancy and the spread of STIs, whether used during heterosexual or homosexual contact. That one second delivers a message; it's weird that you CRC guys are so fixated on it.

According to Economy Watch, Andhra Pradesh reported a literacy rate of 60.5% on its 2001 census. This video uses a combination of images to get its message across: the popular "Tollywood" musical theater style, explicit warnings about HIV/AIDS and pregnancy in the song, photos of condoms and of stores that sell condoms, and pictures of couples. This looks to me like an attempt to reach people who are not necessarily highly educated, if they have any formal education at all.
Following Jim's remark that we do not know about Telugu marriage customs, I did some googling and learned that the bridegroom in a traditional marriage ceremony wears white clothing with a red border. The chorus of dancers in the video is wearing the colors of a bridegroom. This may be another use of visual imagery that is familiar to the target audience and has a meaning we wouldn't necessarily get.
"That one second delivers a message; it's weird that you CRC guys are so fixated on it."
You're the one that highlighted the scene. Don't be surprised if you get your chain yanked.
The video seems really moronic but the culture gap and the literacy rate is probably what accounts for it.
Ahhh...a breath of fresh air! Jim is finally deleting the obscene and ignorant comments of the "Anonymous" troll and sock-puppet. Perhaps "Anonymous" will finally get the message and take his/her hateful and bigoted comments to another blog site (such as CRC's?)

"hateful and bigoted comments"
Sounds like you got time to ruminate, RT. Let me ask you a question: Is all support for traditional sexual morality hateful and bigoted?
Anonymous: It's your snide, outrageous ad hominem attacks against respondants here that get you in trouble, not to mention your 19th century interpretation of "traditional sexual morality" which is so ludicrous as to evoke pity for you. As I said before, perhaps this just isn't the right place to spout off your ignorance and homophobia. There are plenty of right-wing sites where you would have a much more receptive and admiring audience than you have here, where no one gives a fig for what you have to say.

If by "traditional" sexual morality you mean your desire to keep gays from having sex lives, absolutely. The only immoral acts are those that harm others and gays in a loving and committed relationship harm no one by having sex, their sex lives are by definition moral and your opposition to them is by definition hateful and bigoted.

Most gay sexual activity is a sado-masochistic parody of heterosexuality and so unhealthy and dangerous as to be an slow suicide act. Yeah, they harm no one except themselves and each other. Hundreds of thousands dead of AIDS which, let's face it, entered our society because we tolerated promiscuous public gay sexual activity. Not because we suppressed it.
Anon, you are "a sado-masochistic parody of heterosexuality and so unhealthy and dangerous as to be an slow suicide act." You must be satire.
