Winter Storm Coming
Yesterday I made the mistake of wearing my winter coat to work. When I walked home from the Metro at night it was still close to seventy degrees out there, and I was sweating. This morning was more comfortable, cool but not very cold, but I see in The Post there's a chance we'll have a pretty bad ice storm in our part of the county tonight, and maybe snow.
Here's how they're putting it at Weather Underground when I put in my zip code:
Okay, well it sounds like a good night for a fire, a night to stay home. I'm reading that new biography of John Lennon, maybe I'll get through a few more pages of that. I'm okay with snow, but there's nothing picturesque or charming about sleet and freezing rain, if you ask me.

Tonight
A mixture of rain...freezing rain and sleet. Little or no sleet accumulation. Ice accumulation less than a tenth of an inch. Lows in the lower 30s. East winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation near 100 percent.

Thanks for the post, Jim.
Right now I am sitting outside at a nice café in Valladolid, Yucatán, Mexico. I will be en route to Playa del Carmen in about 30 mins. However, I am looking forward to coming back to the USA on Saturday and would not mind seeing some snow (at least until I fly back to Chiapas on Jan. 3rd.)!!
Happy Holidays, everyone!!
Much to the disappointment of area children, rain is forecast for tonight.
There's a rumor among students in Fairfax that the schools will not be open Dec 21 and 22 to save money. It's interesting how these rumors start, since I can find absolutely no official discussion of such a thing.
Maybe it's just wishful thinking manifesting as belief; kind of like reparative therapy.
Well, Robert, here in Rockville sleet is pounding down out of the sky at this moment.
As for rumors, I am always amazed at how many rumors turn out to be true!

In my department I'm renowned for accuracy in predicting two-hour-delays and snow-days. We all have to have our little areas of expertise.
I hope they don't cancel school, 'cause the christmas music special is Tuesday.

Glad to hear they still let you have a "Christmas" music concert in Fairfax.
Honey, everyone has a Christmas music special. Where have you been?
The whole 'war on christmas' is a fundraising gimmick.
We're also having a "Messiah" concert. I hope it's a sing-along.
What school is that, Robert, and what's the date of the sing-a-long?
Robert, in MC, there is a directive that the only two Christian holidays allowed to be celebrated in public schools is Halloween and Valentine's Day.
On Valentine's I wear black.
As I've said before, if we're going to celebrate religious holidays, it should be All Saints Day and Ash Wednesday.
You'll note that MCPS winter and spring breaks are always Christmas and Easter.
"You'll note that MCPS winter and spring breaks are always Christmas and Easter."
Actually, Spring break doesn't always coincide with Easter.
MCPS policy is to close when it is expected that the majority of kids won't be in school anyway.
It's just practicality.
MCPS policy is to close when it is expected that the majority of kids won't be in school anyway.
Show us the policy you're referring to.
This year MCPS closes schools on several religious holidays, including Christmas, Easter, Passover, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
I'm haven't seen MCPS' policy, but Fairfax' policy is more or less as he stated: to close when a certain percentage of its students will be pulled out of school by parents. That includes federal holidays, day after thanksgiving, Christmas week, the Christian holy week, inauguration. It does not include Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashana, Passover, or Eid.
