Reaction To The PFOX Flyers Is Growing

TeachTheFacts.org first formed in late 2004 when our school district came under attack by rightwing extremists for its plan to implement a somewhat comprehensive sex-ed curriculum that included a condom-usage video and some objective and correct statements about sexual orientation. The most intense criticisms were about the sexual orientation part, with the arguments consisting mainly of a laundry-list of complaints about the stereotype of the gay man. One court document argued that if the schools taught about various orientations students will become gay, catch AIDS, and come back to sue the school district. Costing the taxpayers millions, see? That's why we shouldn't teach the facts. The two groups that filed lawsuits, over and over again, were the Citizens for a Responsible Whatever and PFOX. PFOX is not a friend of the school district, and PFOX is not a friend of any gay person. PFOX's premise is that being gay is bad, and their recommendation is that gay people should just quit it and turn straight.

It was a hard fight, and in the end our side won a decent curriculum but the other side intimidated the school district and kept important information out under the threat of more lawsuits. Some school board members made firm statements about the new curriculum, and in the end all of them except one predictable member voted in favor of it. But the reason TTF had to organize in the first place was that elected officials and their staff, in general, fear controversy.

The school district should not be handing out flyers to children telling them that gay people can choose to be straight. It is scientifically incorrect and morally indefensible to make students think there is something wrong with being gay, and that you can choose to change if you want. It is unhealthy advice for those students who are discovering they are gay or lesbian, and it is dangerous advice for the straight students, who will believe that their gay peers are that way because they decided to be. But our school district has agreed to spread just that message four times a year to high school students, and they do it without complaining. We had a progressive school board members tell The Post recently that "These fliers are probably counter to what is available in our health curriculum" when the flyers directly contradict the health curriculum, and then she defended the district's freedom of speech to tell students the opposite of the truth. I don't think you'll find any other board members, and certainly not the Superintendent's office, speaking out about the PFOX flyers. They shrug their shoulders and say "the court ordered us to do this," and that's the end of it.

Montgomery County parents send their children off to school with the expectation that they will be educated and that they will be safe. They do not expect the school district to be giving their children literature from hate groups. It would be irresponsible to ignore a group like PFOX outside the school distributing poisonous flyers, this is not mere irresponsibility. The school district is actively packaging these flyers and using teacher resources and time that could be spent on education to give this hate literature to students. This goes beyond irresponsibility. It's not like they are negligent, MCPS is the active agent in this.

The schools are complying with their interpretation of Child Evangelism Fellowship v. Montgomery County Pub. Sch.. In that case the schools had refused to distribute flyers from a Christian evangelical group on grounds that it would have comprised "establishment of religion" by government -- the public schools. The court saw it the other way and said that forbidding the flyers amounted to interfering with the group's freedom of speech. That's one thing when it's a Sunday-school group, but it is absurd to think that the schools are required to hand out anybody's opinion, even when it directly contradicts important information that is taught in health classes. It is cheaper from a legal perspective, and that's apparently what drives the school district's decision to hand out PFOX's flyers for them. On the other hand, you can't ignore the fact that they have chosen to re-appoint Peter Sprigg, who has said on national television that he believes homosexual behavior should be criminalized, to a third term on the citizens advisory committee for sex education. Sprigg's view is certainly not representative of citizens of our county, but it appears that's what the school board and the Superintendent want.

I've been following some of the listserves' discussions of this topic. It appears that MCPS distributed the flyers at Walter Johnson, Seneca Valley, Gaithersburg, Potomac, Watkins Mill, and Richard Montgomery, probably others, and parents are very angry about it. Even the Parents Coalition listserve is having a discussion about this "PFOX Propaganda" (their subject line). Some members seem to think it is only fair to give "both sides" a chance to reach our county's young people, another guy said "Other than the fact that your CHOICE argument is completely ignorant, the bottom line is that these kind of Christian groups are trying to recruit our kids and they don’t belong there." I was curious to know where they'd fall on this one, it appears the main leaders do not like to see PFOX recruiting in our public schools.

At one of the schools, parents are gearing up a campaign to send emails to Regina Griggs at PFOX, protesting the flyers. I wouldn't bother. Regina lives for that kind of reaction, she's like Rush Limbaugh or Anne Coulter, her real goal is to get under your skin. She knows that gay people can't choose to be straight -- her own son is gay, and the whole reason for PFOX is that she wishes he would change, but he doesn't. It's a pitiful situation all the way around, and it is pathetic that our school district has bought into it. If you are going to protest, don't bother sending email to PFOX, they're just doing what their funding sources expect them to do. Send your emails to the MCPS Board of Education, the Superintendent, administrative staff inside Carver, their legal office, don't bother sending it to PFOX.

Somebody has created an online petition HERE. Go ahead and click on it.

PFOX sued Arlington Public Schools because Arlington wouldn't distribute their flyers. Arlington's response was that they no longer distribute anyone's flyers, thus not creating a public forum entitling unfettered speech.

If MCPS's hands are indeed tied by court rulings and the constitution, they must consider whether any information students receive through the 'backpack' distribution is worth the disinformation they must receive from PFOX' flyers.

well, they've already decided that

the answer is yes

this is clearly a case where the homosexual community is trying to harm the community interest to promote their cult belief that no homosexual should be allowed to leave the gay cult

to protect this, we've now had to set up a bunch of stupid rules to hinder the Boy Scouts and church groups and 4H club notices

and Robbie the gay advocacy robot, now would like us to simply ban all community communication through this most convenient avenue

again, their is no scientific proof that a person's sexual preferences can't change

The original lawsuit was brought by Child Evangelism Fellowship (of whose trainings I am a graduate). PFOX is using the ruling to strongarm MCPS. No lgbt organization, none whatsoever, anywhere, has tried to distribute materials in schools to recruit children to be lgb or t. Gay people don't recruit; Christians do.

I've asked before, darling, are you an Asimov fan, or do you just somehow think you're saying clever things about my name? Which you know, btw. What's yours?

Anon reiterated:

“again, their is no scientific proof that a person's sexual preferences can't change”

There is no scientific proof that one CAN change their sexual preference.

In fact, several of the leaders of the Ex-gay movement have come to realize that their decades long attempts to change people’s orientations were not only futile but damaging to the people they were trying to serve. Fortunately some of the Exodus leaders eventually came to grips with reality and apologized for the psychological damage they did – including at least one suicide.

Former Ex-Gay Leaders apologize:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDiYeJ_bsQo

From Darlene Bogle’s apology: (http://www.beyondexgay.com/article/bogleapology )

“Before I met Des, I considered myself “ex-gay” because I had ceased sexual activity, and I spent my time promoting “change” in others. When these changes did not occur, the people in my care frequently asked how long it would take for desires to change. I lied and encouraged them to keep praying and reading their Bible. When they asked how long it took for me, I avoided the question. My heart was in the right place, but my message was not. I apologize to those individuals and families who believed my message that change was necessary to be acceptable to God. In recent years I have seen the resulting damage from rejection, shame, and conditional love. I apologize for my part in presenting a God of conditional love, and ask forgiveness for the message of broken truth I spoke on behalf of Exodus.”

“My heart breaks as I hear the many stories of abuse and suicide from men and women who couldn’t change their orientation, regardless of what Exodus and other Christian ministries told them. One of our female attendees became so depressed over her inability to change that she jumped off a bridge rather than continue the struggle. I was told it wasn’t my fault, but my heart knew better.”

“My call today is for those ministries to hear these stories with their heart, and to cease spewing messages that damage the families and individuals who are homosexual. Stand up for truth, but not the broken truth of mandated change to be acceptable to God. There does need to be change in our lives, but our sexual orientation is not what needs to be healed. I call for a time of healing within the body of faith that will celebrate Christ’s life within all His children.”

How many more people have to suffer or commit suicide before the rest of the Ex-gay ministries come to the same hard-won conclusions that these Exodus leaders finally came to?

Derick, you're a dork!

this lame petition is not going to convince the MCPS board to support the gay propaganda cult

"Sarah Palin said Sunday she would run for President if she believed it was "the right thing to do" for the country, and tore into President Obama for acting like he believed Americans should "shut up" and accept his policies"

yes, that pretty much sums up the Democrat position

they're smarter than the average American citizen so everyone should just shut up

and they wonder why they keep losing elections

"Palin, fresh off an appearance at the Tea Party movement's first national convention, made clear that she would actively get involved in party primary contests during the midterm elections just as she did last year in supporting a Conservative Party candidate in upstate New York over what she considered a too-liberal Republican, and as she is doing now in backing Rand Paul for the GOP Senate nomination in Kentucky. Paul is the son of Texas Rep. Ron Paul.

Palin said she wanted the "competition (in primaries) to allow the cream of the crop to rise."

She acknowledged that "there are candidates who will not seek my support because some will perceive me as being too polarizing and if they're in more liberal districts or states they won't want someone like me who has been unfortunately by the media put in a box ... So some people will shy away from my support that I could offer. But those who recognize that I do have strong opinions, and a lot of common sense and if they ask for my help, I'm gonna give it to them."

On Fox News Sunday, Palin said the Tea Party movement had grown because "both major parties have both kind of lost their way in some respects."

"When the GOP strays from the planks in the platform, a people's movement like the Tea Party movement is invited in to kind of hold these politicians accountable again," she said.

Asked to evaluate Obama's presidency, Palin said, "He has some misguided decisions that he is making that he is expecting us to just kind of sit down and shut up and accept, and many of us are not going to sit down and shut up."

Palin said Obama has a "general persona, when he's up there at a lectern and he is telling us, basically, 'I know best. My people here in the White House know best, and we are going to tell you that yes, you do want this essentially nationalized health care system.' And we're saying, 'No, we don't.' "

Palin also called for the resignations of Attorney General Holder and White House Chief of Staff Emanuel. She criticized Holder for the decision to try accused terrorists in civil courts. She said Emanuel should resign for describing as "f'ing retarded" liberal activists who planned to air ads attacking conservative Democrats."

doesn't matter how many signatures there are, the flyers will still go out

if someone identifies as ex-gay, they are ostracized by the lunatic fringe which is plentiful in MC because we are so tolerant of nuts that they are drawn here

even the mention of their existence must be wiped out by those seething with hatred for these people who are reviled more than most straights because they were once part of the homosexual cult and have now betrayed it

believe it or not, there were once many gays who thought they were acting out of their own volition and preferrred to stay discreet

"if somebody used to be gay and now they aren't, nobody really cares. It's their own business."

that may be true as long as they don't tell anyone they used to be in the cult

why should there be DADT about people who used to be gay?

"If somebody used to be gay and now says they aren't, and goes around telling gay people they should go back into the closet, they are seen as obnoxious."

I don't think anyone says that. More likely, they may say you can be released from bondage to same gender sexual preference. Few ex-gays say keep up the gaiety but keep it quiet. They usually say you can be free.

"Obnoxiousness is not protected under any Constitution or law."

speech that is perceived as obnoxious by a minority is protected

ex-gays pay taxes to support schools too and they are entitled to use the same avenues of community outreach as everyone else to offer assistance to those who are in the same situation they used to be in

nobody says AA should be denied free speech just because drunks may consider them obnoxious

the problem is the fringe wants kids who suffer from same gender attraction to hear only one option: indulge

The Golden Rule...or "Live and let live" are anathema to your warped system of morality and ethics.
Get a life (and try focusing on the sins and misdeeds of your own kind in, perhaps, reducing the divorce rate, or taking care of homeless children, or not visiting places like the notorious heterosexual Bethesda sex den!)

Here's an excellent comment on this topic that was originally posted on Vigilance back in March 2006:

"Bill Ware said...

It is not psychologically healthy to pretend to be something you're not. Or as one of the posters in my office said:

Be who you is
Because if you be who you ain't,
Then you ain't who you is

Christianity can be a great force for good psychological health when it teaches that God loves us for who we are despite our imperfections or "sins," as demonstrated by the ministry of His Son. We acknowledge God's love for us by loving ourselves and loving others for who they are as well.

Reparitive or conversion therapies are the opposite of this. They teach people to deny who they are and try to be something they are not. This attempt at personality dis-integration, that is, trying to separate a person's basic human needs for love and affection from the behaviors that would satisfy these needs, is just the opposite of legitimate therapy practices which help a person toward a fully integrated personality, that is, one in which a person learns to satisfy their needs in an appropriate way.

Personality integration leads to a happier, healthier life. The personality dis-integration that reparitive or conversion therapy leads to produces the harmful effects that have been well documented in most instances. Practices that lead to personality dis-integration are clearly unethical as the American Psychiatric Association has stated.

Those who support these therapies on religious grounds also miss the whole point of Christ's teaching, that we love our neighbor as God does, just as we are, and thank heaven for that!
March 19, 2006 1:43 PM"

Here's what the American Psychiatric Association has to say about reparative therapy:

1. APA affirms its 1973 position that homosexuality per se is not a diagnosable mental disorder. Recent publicized efforts to repathologize homosexuality by claiming that it can be cured are often guided not by rigorous scientific or psychiatric research, but sometimes by religious and political forces opposed to full civil rights for gay men and lesbians. APA recommends that the APA respond quickly and appropriately as a scientific organization when claims that homosexuality is a curable illness are made by political or religious groups.

2. As a general principle, a therapist should not determine the goal of treatment either coercively or through subtle influence. Psychotherapeutic modalities to convert or "repair" homosexuality are based on developmental theories whose scientific validity is questionable. Furthermore, anecdotal reports of "cures" are counterbalanced by anecdotal claims of psychological harm. In the last four decades, "reparative" therapists have not produced any rigorous scientific research to substantiate their claims of cure. Until there is such research available, APA recommends that ethical practitioners refrain from attempts to change individuals' sexual orientation, keeping in mind the medical dictum to First, do no harm.

3. The "reparative" therapy literature uses theories that make it difficult to formulate scientific selection criteria for their treatment modality. This literature not only ignores the impact of social stigma in motivating efforts to cure homosexuality, it is a literature that actively stigmatizes homosexuality as well. "Reparative" therapy literature also tends to overstate the treatment's accomplishments while neglecting any potential risks to patients. APA encourages and supports research in the NIMH and the academic research community to further determine "reparative" therapy's risks versus its benefits.

From Kori Ashton’s Survivor Narrative: http://www.beyondexgay.com/narratives/kori

“Wanting to please others – I decided once again to suppress my sexual desires and attempt to become the “ideal” Christian young lady. I left SAGU in 1999 and rekindled my dream of singing around the world for Jesus. Along with a few friends, I started a Christian band called “Exit” and began using the title “Ex-Gay” for publicity. Word spread quickly about the band and almost overnight we began working with Exodus International, Exodus Youth, PFOX, Focus on the Family and several other ex-gay affiliates. I founded MyTrueFreedom.net – an ex-gay website where I shared my struggle and directed kids and teens to Exodus Youth. Within two years the website had over 180,000 viewers.
As a band our first gig was opening for the Christian band Skillet and it wasn’t long before we was touring the United States and opening for bands like Tree 63, David Crowder, Pillar, Third Day and others. Ii ministered side by side with several well-known icons of the ex-gay circle like Sy Rogers in Florida and Dennis Jernigan in Oklahoma. We released 3 CDs and our music was heard on the radio around the world via Calvary Satellite Network.

In 2002 we were the featured band for the youth portion of the Exodus International National Conference in Wheaton, IL. Through the years my band ministered at Cornerstone Festival with Exodus Youth, many Love Won Out Conferences across the United States and was the featured speaker and worship team for many ex-gay events.

Well on the way to fame in the Christian market, my schedule kept me so busy that it was becoming easier for me to ignore my homosexual feelings. Years passed and I decided to become a solo artist (Kori Ashton Band) and continue in the ex-gay ministry, now as a full time worship pastor of a large church in Idaho where I led five worship services to over 9,000 people per week.

I was at last living my dream – singing for Jesus and sharing God’s love – but somehow I was still quietly hurting and lonely. I had been so preoccupied with creating an image of a “Perfect Christian,” that I had ignored who I knew I truly was. After leaving the full-time ministry in 2004, I stopped running, turned and faced my struggle. Through counseling and mentoring, personal discovery and family support, I finally found a balance of my sexual identity and my faith!

It has been a lot of tears and prayers, but I am blessed to say that I am now Ex-Ex Gay. No label fits me better than “Set Free!” The manipulation of the condemning so-called “Christians” (not true examples of Christ) with their failed rehabs and the self-abuse of needed perfection is NO MORE! God's Word is Truth - Nothing can separate us from His Love!

Have a lovely day,

Cynthia

Ex-gay therapy survivor testifies at gay marriage trial

A gay man who was forced to undergo 'reparative therapy' to make him straight has given evidence before a trial on California's gay marriage ban.

Ryan Kendall, 26, told the court his Christian parents discovered he was gay at the age of 13.

He said that he was forced to undergo the controversial 'cure' therapy for nearly two years as a teenager and was first sent to see a Christian therapist and then the National Association of Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH).

Kendall testified that the therapy had left him feeling suicidal.

He said: "I remember my mother looking at me and telling me I was going to burn in hell.

"I knew I was gay, just like I knew I was short and half Hispanic. I never thought those facts would change."

He was cross-examined gently by an attorney for the opposing side.

Lawyer James Campbell asked him whether someone people voluntarily went to organisations such as NARTH to become straight, although Kendall said in his experience, people "don't want to go" to such therapies...

apparently, trying to counter alarmist global warming theories also causes suicidal tendencies:

"LONDON (Feb. 8) -- Professor Phil Jones, the scientist at the center of the "climategate" scandal, said this weekend that he had contemplated suicide after hackers leaked hundreds of messages they had stolen from CRU e-mail accounts. Some of the e-mails -- released just before the Copenhagen Climate Summit -- show Jones calling on colleagues to withhold or destroy scientific data requested under Britain's Freedom of Information (FoI) laws.

Jones, head of the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at England's University of East Anglia, told The Sunday Times he was unprepared for the backlash that followed the publication of his e-mails, and suffered a "David Kelly moment" -- a reference to the British scientist who killed himself in 2003 after casting doubts on government claims about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction.

Jones said he has suffered health problems since hackers released e-mails from him on climate changed.
"I did think about it, yes. About suicide," said Jones. "I thought about it several times, but I think I've got past that stage now."

The scandal has taken a heavy toll on Jones' health. He said that he has lost more than 14 pounds and that he takes beta blockers to help him get through the day and sleeping pills to get him through the night. He told The Sunday Times he has been under stress in the past week, after Britain's deputy information commissioner ruled that Jones had failed to follow FOI regulations.

Jones has temporarily stepped down as director of the CRU, while Sir Muir Russell, the former vice chancellor of Glasgow University, reviews the climategate affair.

The science of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) -- the U.N. body charged with investigating global warming -- appears far less rigorous, however. Just weeks after it was discovered that the IPCC's 2007 report falsely claimed the Himalayas could be glacier-free by 2035, more errors have been spotted in the 3,000-page report.

Most damaging is the suggestion that global warming could halve rain-fed North African crop production by 2020 -- a claim quoted in speeches by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Rajendra Pachauri, the IPCC chairman. Professor Chris Field, the new lead author of the IPCC's climate impacts team, told The Sunday Times there was no hard scientific evidence to back up this statement, which appears to have been pulled from papers that were not peer reviewed.

Scientists convinced that human activity is a major cause of global warming say it is now essential that the IPCC and other research groups get their houses in order, as the steady flow of scandals is eroding climate science's credibility. A BBC poll this weekend found that since the climategate scandal broke last November, the percentage of Brits who don't believe in climate change has increased 150%."

completely off topic, just trying to figure out how to keep the trees from coming down...

yeah, I'm getting that global warm and fuzzy feelin'

"1,043 signatures against hate!"

Wow! Did you break single digits on county residents yet?

The teachers who encouraged this petition should be fired and a DADT policy instituted for teachers and school administrators.

Trying to encourage the cultlike belief that kids with same gender attraction are trapped is against their interests.

Misery loves company.

man, is November 2010 gonna be fun!

"President Obama's job approval rating for his handling of the economy has fallen to its lowest point since he took office with only 36 percent giving him positive marks on the issue, according to a Gallup poll conducted Feb. 1-3. Sixty-one percent disapprove of his performance.

Obama's best marks for his job performance on specific issues are mostly in the foreign policy area. Forty-eight percent approve of his handling of terrorism while 49 percent do not; 48 percent approve of his handling of Afghanistan while 47 percent do not; and, 47 percent approve of his handling of the situation in Iraq while 48 percent do not.

The foreign issue on which Obama does the most poorly is Iran, where the stalemate over its nuclear program continues. Fifty percent disapprove of Obama's performance here, while 42 percent approve.

The public has highly negative views of Obama when it comes to health care and the budget deficit. Americans disapprove of his performance on health care by 60 percent to 36 percent and on the deficit by 64 percent to 32 percent."

I wonder if any Democrats win be elected this year....

Too funny.
What a sense of timing this guy has...

announcing the creation of a climate change panel (read MORE government jobs ... he already has grown govt by 14% since in office)...

during the BIGGEST SNOW STORM to hit DC in at least a century...

This announcement was probably planned a long time ago... who thinks the Big Guy upstairs decided to poke a little more fun ??? Obama decides to go ahead with the announcement anyway, and to punish his impudence, the Big Guy whacks him again !

And Bea, I have so been enjoying as I run around to get gas for the generator, etc, telling everyone in the check out lines that the "liberal loonies" well tell you that all this snow is PROOF of global warming...

everyone is QUITE amused.
So thanks for that.

That's for the information on religion being a choice.

Question 2: are all religious choices equivalent?

Question 3: if not, should all religious ceremonies have the same legal effect? I am of course speaking of marriage ceremonies.

Did you tell them about El Nino that is causing Olympics planners to have to haul snow to one of their Vancouver mountain venues and the thigh-deep "thunderous mudslides" plaguing Southern California, or maybe even the severe warming of Greenland and surrounding seas, as well as these February snow storms, all of which are happening in North America during the same winter season?

No? Then what can you expect?

Incomplete data in, meaningless conclusion out.

That's right!

There's more snow in DC (District of Columbia) than in BC (British Columbia)!

Please, Bea. Vancouver is one of the most temperate cities in all of Canada, and snow can never be guaranteed. Google it. On Christmas, they say there's an ELEVEN PERCENT chance of having a white Christmas.

You're hilarious, Bea, with all of your global warming talk!

"Anon, there are not words for someone who finds humor in someone else's suicide."

Actually, no one ever did that.

Someone did point out that lunatic fringe gay advocates will often play the suicide card, essentially saying unless we change society to their liking, many of them will commit suicide.

What if everyone tried to play that type of emotional blackmail?

I'm the stonee not the stoner and most TTFers are just plain stoned most if the time

"Well, they'll stone ya when you're trying to be so good,
They'll stone ya just a-like they said they would.
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to go home.
Then they'll stone ya when you're there all alone.
But I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

Well, they'll stone ya when you're walkin' 'long the street.
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to keep your seat.
They'll stone ya when you're walkin' on the floor.
They'll stone ya when you're walkin' to the door.
But I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

They'll stone ya when you're at the breakfast table.
They'll stone ya when you are young and able.
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to make a buck.
They'll stone ya and then they'll say, "good luck."
Tell ya what, I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

Well, they'll stone you and say that it's the end.
Then they'll stone you and then they'll come back again.
They'll stone you when you're riding in your car.
They'll stone you when you're playing your guitar.
Yes, but I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

Well, they'll stone you when you walk all alone.
They'll stone you when you are walking home.
They'll stone you and then say you are brave.
They'll stone you when you are set down in your grave.
But I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned."
